The judge, the Activist and Grand-Mother Nature - Leningreen

[My good friend Leningreen has asked me to post this message on his
behalf.]

Courtrooms can be great theaters for drawing attention to a political
cause.
And even an imprisonment can be a rallying cry for supporters to keep
people
inspired.
And the imprisonment itself can be valuable in raising awareness of
fellow
prisoners, and for the political prisoner to learn about other issues as
well.

To me civil disobedience is a tactical question of evaluating the
usefulness
of the arrest versus some other use that that person could make of their
freedom - eg giving speeches, taking part in other discussions, etc.

People get locked up for advocating a variety of political value
systems,
some I support and some I do not. However, in the scenario of a
reactionary
state that doesn't democratically represent the will of the majority of
humanity, freedom of speech is to be supported without reservation.

Injunctions are very powerful tools wielded by owners of private
property.

I think that the question of private property and capitalism comes
immediately to the fore in any of these environmental protest situations.

One of the most important follow-up discussions and consciousness
raising
foci should then center on how societies resources - human, land, water,
technology, etc. - should be managed and allocated.

This is the ultimate value of such protests in highlighting the need
to
evolve to the next possible level of social-economic-political
organization
given existing embryonic trajectories that could be either seized control
of
or redirected/repurposed even if initiated or currently controlled by
interests antithetical to the longterm strategic objective.

Eg. How one might repurpose the fast food restaurant industry's
infrastructure, real estate locations, and standardized operating
procedures
to efficiently and creatively serve human health, nutrition and
environmental enhancement.

Thanks Laurent for this posting.

A bit of context:

The Eagleridge Bluffs protest took place in April and May of 2006 in West
Vancouver, BC, Canada. At stake was the protection of a unique wetland just
north of Horseshoe Bay. The government of BC has decided to build a highway
through that ecosystem, as part of the infrastructure improvements for the 2010
Winter Olympics.

Hundreds of people stood up to stop the project. 25 people got arrested,
yours truly included. Betty K served as our moral and spiritual leader.

What I think is truly important about this battle is the type of people who
stood up to protect those wetlands. It was not a bunch of eco-radicals or
professional activists, but middle-classs, average Joe Doe taxpayers who were
concerned about their environment and the future of their children.

More than half of the arrestees were from outside of West Vancouver. So it
wasn't a "NIMBY" protest either.

That's, in my opinion, the watershed event that defines this battle: people
from the middle class became radical.
