I received a new special offer from Mandriva, the French Linux distribution, today inviting me to renew my subscription for a year and get a free Fonera router. A Mandriva subscription is just 120 Euro and lets you access more versions of the operating system earlier than the general public, as well as automated free updates but, what is a Fonera router?
Well, Fonera is the self
proclaimed World's Largest WiFi Community
. Each member will share their
own wireless access point with other members. It doesn't mean that anyone who
walks by gets free WiFi access but rather that any member who also share their
access point at home will get free wireless Internet access when they walk by
yours. Those who don't share pay for the access while those who are not members
simply do not have access.
You can check the Fonera map for an access point near you!
